This is a copy-paste of a post I made here. Given that you all seem to be a fairly serious group of micronationalists, I'd love to see your opinion.

I have just read the speech at the link above.
I have to confess, I'm no genius on the US tax code, but it does appear to have more holes than a cheese grater..
I'm an economic right-winger. I believe in low taxation and low interference to the full extent that it is practical and possible. I don't believe that you should have to relinquish a greater amount (in percentage terms) of your earnings just because you have succeeded. I do believe in a flat rate of taxation, so long as it includes a sufficient tax-free threshold to avoid over-burdening the lowest income workers.
However, you don't have to be a radical left-wing socialist to know that, when Warren Buffett pays less tax (in percentage terms) than his secretary, something is seriously wrong with your tax code.
A speech will always be laced with political spin, but what I have just read, without having looked into the detail of the plan, looks to me like President Obama is on the right track.
He covers cutting wasteful spending, he talks of infrastructure improvements, he looks to have targeted tax reductions at the right spot, and he taks of the need to fix the loopholes.
Do I think it can work to repair the economy? I don't know. I'll take that question on notice until I've looked deeper into the package.
If the rhetoric in his speech is what actually transpires, I think he's at least on the right track.
What are your thoughts? Has he got it right? Will it work? Will he get it through congress, especially the House?
I am assuming there will be a speech-in-reply from Boehner. Should be interesting.
Apparently Michelle Bachmann intends to make her own speech-in-reply; that should be good for a chuckle. Correct me if I'm wrong, but from the coverage of her I've seen down under, she seems borderline bonkers.
