Ladies and gentlemen,
This discussion has been started on the MN.eu forum and Myself and another Citizen of Alteria thought it would be good to pose the same questions/statements here to try and form discussion on this topic. This is not trying to cause offence, but these thoughts have been raised through discussions in Alteria and we feel it is a need to widen the discussion to other nations.

Chas & I are presently chatting on AIM. We're wondering, can full blown universally recognized independent nationhood truly be achieved? In other words, can a new nation project or micronation get the gold standard. More specifically, the gold standard being: the ability to join the United Nations as a member state if membership were desired. (It is worthy to note a new nation may opt not to join the United Nations, but would not otherwise be precluded from membership)
Cases in point: Switzerland chose not to be a UN member for decades but later was able to join without much fuss among member states. The Republic of China [Taiwan] or the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic [Western Sahara] both theoretically meet just about all the requirements for entry. But are blocked by other member states.
Let's be real. Nobody has come close to the gold standard. Not Sealand. Not Hutt River. Not Atlantium. Not even Minerva. So can this really happen?

J actually bet me to the post hehe, but yes this I feel needs to be discussed. We as leaders or citizens of Micronations pour our heart and soul into our nations, building up everything, making flags, building languages, spending in some cases hundreds of dollars, pounds, or what ever currency and yet none of us have ever archived that status of being recognized a nation in the true sense of the word, and be able to hold our heads up with those nations that occupy this planet.
Many people quote Sealand or Huttriver as the standard, but to be honest what have they done? are they recognized? or they a true nation that trades, and relates to say, the UK, or Australia? Can you board a plane in London and fly to Sealand? Does the UK government recognize your Sealand passport?
Now please be aware I'm a big supporter of Micronationalism, and I'm not trying to actually cause offence here, but I think its time this discussion was put forward. Our nations are little more than dreams, little more than simulations of the real thing with custom names and identities, sure nations such as Atlantium spend hundreds of dollars on flags, coins, websites, etc etc, they get coverage on TV now and then, but most coverage puts the said nation across as little more than a joke, as a one mans dream or fantasy world, no offence intended.
Alteria is working through discussions on how to best target our goals, and this discussion has lead to these questions being asked. How do others feel?
