How about creating a numismatic section?
Aidan.

You just did. I'll sticky this thread, and those who are interested can add to it progressively. If it turns out there's a groundswell of interest in the subject we can set up a separate board further down the track.

I also encourage anyone to see the USNS website and join the USNS (Unrecognized States Numismatic Society) - www.usns.info

Hi Oded, and welcome to LOM. For those who aren't aware of it, Mr Paz is the esteemed founder and president of the Unrecognised States Numismatic Society, a numismatic society registered in the US as a not-for-profit organisation, and affiliated with the American Numismatic Association. The USNS is the world's only coin club specialising in money issued by micronations and similar entities.

George, I think that it should be a whole new board,as opposed to a single thread.

Hi Aidan.
Like I said already, if we start to see a significant upswing of messages on this subject, then we can think about setting up a dedicated board. However, at this stage I don't really see any justification for it.
Micronations are not exactly flooding the market with new releases at the moment.

You Will ENJOY the commemorative coin and banknotes that are being issued by the Réunian Government to our 12th anniversary!
I will publish pictures as soon as they are done!
And God, I received a LOVELY coin from Monte Cristo, it's really really beautiful!
\Are you familiar with that micronation?

Actually, although TorHavn is not planning to issue actual banknotes (our currency system doesn't use metal, only hemp paper) we are planning to create commemorative coins next year (our tenth year anniversary), in Esperanto.
As for stamps, we do have a design (based on our logo for our 2002 Olympics), but haven't printed any yet. We can get them printed from yourstamps.com, and they're actually usable, but other things keep getting in the way (including unfortunate mundane situations).

One of my Nobles came across something that I think would be a good tool in strengthening micronations internally, as well as helping to knit the communities together... It leans on the barter system, in which one service is traded for another... Its called TimeBanks... www.timebanks.org/I think it's an idea that could be used when it comes to our nations' currencies... Take a look...

Greetings friends! Réunion is (not so much because of its dreadful photographer) proud to present to the microworld our first COMMEMORATIVE COIN. It commemorates the 12th year past since our independence. Here go the pictures (sorry again for them)! Please comment! Yours, Claudio de Castro (Diameter: 7cm)

I think the coin looks great!! Not only is the coin bi-metallic, but it looks like you have some of the details done in enamel, too! Is there a specific denomination for this coin (a monetary unit)? Thanks so much for these images, I definitely need to add this coin to my collection! Erik

The coin looks really great, congratulations.
As Réunion is our first ally, I would love to buy one piece for the Jirmanian collections.

Thanks so much for these images, I definitely need to add this coin to my collection! Erik Greetings! Yes, the coin is gold-plated and nickel-plated, with enamel finishing in the Réunian Coat of Arms (on the colors white, blue, yellow, green and red). The coin is 7cm wide (or 2.75 inches), and weighs 100 grams. We are ordering 250 of them done. The Front says " Sacro Império de Reunião " (HOLY EMPIRE OF RÉUNION) "12 anos" (12 years) 1997-2009 And has two dodo-birds (our national anthem) and the Crowned-aureoled-R. The back reads: CLAUDIVS I D G P ACC REUNIONAEAUG IMP FIDEI DEFENSOR (Claudio the First, By the Acclamation of God, Pious Emperor of Réunion, Defender of the Faith) CID (That is, our BANK name) Under the coat of arms it reads: "escudo imperial" (imperial coat of arms). Thank you, we really wanted to accomplish this dream of having our own coin! The coin is named " Commemorative Coin Celebrating the 12th Anniversary of Réunion" and it has no face value. Yours, Claudio de Castro

Nice coin Claudio.
Would I be correct in assuming it was produced by Jorge Fernandez Vidal?

Nice coin Claudio. Would I be correct in assuming it was produced by Jorge Fernandez Vidal? ] No, George. It was done by a company here in Rio called BRIJOU. The design is from Réunian citizens Diesley Meira and Flávio Miranda. Yours, Claudio

The Kingdom of Jirmania FINALLY started to design its first post stamp (originally planned for summer 2006). If everything goes smoothly, the stamp should be printed in September and you will see it on your copy of the Christmas greetings.

It appears that Atlantic Bank Note, the guys who did Atlantiums fine bank notes, are no longer taking new orders.
Oh well, I shall have to look elsewhere!

George brought the Independent Sovereign State of Australia to my attention, apparently Don Cameron, the individual behind the ISSA, tried to pass wads of these as legal tender: And some people accepted them.... The smudge on the left is meant to be Queen Elizabeth II, somehow indicated that the "independent sovereign state" was loyal to a foreign Queen, whilst in the middle you can see the Eureka flag, symbol of Australian republicanism! Perhaps this Australian state has some kind of connection to Brazil, that's the only reason I can think for the bank notes having a picture of a famous statue from Rio on the right hand side. It's micronationalism on steroids! Maybe Don Cameron should apply to join that bastion of micronational credibility, the fifth world organisation? :-P More ISSA notes here.

Minor correction: the statue on the ISSA banknotes is a common garden-variety "Sacred Heart of Jesus" statue, found in most Catholic Churches. I don't know who designed it, but the original likely dates from the 19th century, as it is fairly representative of the "wimpy white guy Jesus" that was popular in the Victorian era. It tends to be associated with traditionalist Catholicism. The statue of Christ the Reedemer in Rio is a totally different image from an iconographic perspective; it doesn't have the bleeding heart of Jesus on the figure's chest, and it's a much more stylish piece of work overall.

...and while we're on this subject, here's another wonderful example of religious iconography: Jesus of the Ozarksaka Gumby Jesus. aka Our Milk Carton With Arms.

Why do you post lies? Here's a web page that actually has a bunch of coins from micronations, I don't know whether it's been linked to here before, but it's a must see for anyone perusing this thread for the first time: www.chiefacoins.com/Database/Micro-Nations/
