I have seen a few observations while looking around micronations' websites. It seems the more 'popular' micronations such as Lovely and Sealand are declining in activity (Molossia and Atlantium are exceptions), but there are thousands of unknown micronations. Can somebody confirm this, please?

Its hard to really judge the community to see exactly what is happening in Micronationalism, personally I believe there has been a decline and I have personally seen it myself, but as George will no doubt confirm it depends on how much of the community you actually view or monitor.
Micronationalism is rather large and diverse. With large areas of it not having much contact with other areas and the language barrier coming into play in some areas. Nations come and go with the same frequency as could be compared to ones change of underwear.
I think in the end it comes down to what you consider represents a decline. If you look at the more simulation based nations they tend to merge, break up and change there outward appear weekly, so while it may look like a nation has disappeared, it may infact have just changed from one type of nation to another.

I was thinking of a decline as the total number of micro nations talked about in the news declining.

To the emminent King Christian I:
Micronationalism is a living, growing thing --- a phenomena not easily categorised.
Not only do National Projects grow and change, they give birth, become parts of other Projects, go underground, change their outer shape (to become eco-villages, towns -- as witness Microna -- and ignore the Internet altogether.
For example, my own nation, formerly the Kingdom of TorHavn, became a part of the Kingdom of Bahoudii, and we are now a Duchy of that Project. We didn't "die," but changed. That is the way of a living phenomenon.
Just because you can't see something, doesn't mean that it's gone... just that your range of sight doesn't "see" it.
If you have any further questions, this is probably the best place to pursue it; the List is also, thankfully, a living, growing thing.
