"King Ben" is the legal owner of the registered trademark Talossa, so alas we can't merchandise stuff under that name without risking a lawsuit.

Well, you can use "TALO$$A", "T4LOSSA" etc.

But that's not what we are. Anyway, we could merchandise things that are only bearing graphical references, like flags, logos etc.

Talossa is a generic Finnish word, is it not?
Since when is it possible to trademark generic foreign words?
I'm no lawyer, but I'd suggest you'd have a good case to challenge such a trademark, were you to elect to do so.

I'm not a lawyer, too; as far as I understood the issue, it is indeed so that you can't just randomly pick a word and call it a trademark. But if you have run a business under said name for a while, you can claim this name as a trademark. One might argue that Talossa has never been a business in a commercial sense of the word, but as I've said, I'm not a lawyer. At least the trademark is registered in some file of the US executive, I've seen the entry with my own eyes - the ex-King has spent approximately 500 US$ on this, if my memory serves well.

hmmm... given what I've heard of Ben Madison's (un)employment situation, I'd be tempted to tell him to take a hike, if I were you.
I seriously doubt he has the financial capacity to fund a legal case in support of his questionable trademark.

As I am not familiar with US laws (and as I'm not even a resident of the USA), I have to leave it to the judgement of the Talossans with US citizenship, who recommended to be careful.
Under German circumstances, I would be careful, too. Some freelance working lawyers are eager to jump on the bandwagon of copyright or trademark disputes; apparently this is a goldmine. A simple letter of admonition is often sufficient enough to press a four-digit amount of Euros out of the alleged offender, because a lost court case may cost thrice as much before fines. It's some sort of legal blackmail.

If I recall correctly, sometime forum visitor Julian Starr is a US lawyer.
Julian, if you're around, would you care to voice an opinion?

Speaking of merchandise, George, I recently purchased some of your excellent stamps. Are they the work of www.yourstamps.biz/, or am I mistaken?

I too would like to recommend the work of Mr. Jürgen Schwarz. The product we received was of excellent quality and dealing with Mr. Schwarz was a pleasure for me. When he says that 100% customer satisfaction is his aim, he is not lying.
