Greetings George !!
There are various varieties of definitions;
with your's being excellent examples.
Almost three decades ago, I purchased and
read the book:
"The One Minute Manager"[/i]
( can not...for the life of me...recall the authors name
just now, nor find my copy
); inwhich one of the over-riding
themes to this "book for managers", was the practice of
doing exactly what you pointed out; i.e. understanding of
the psychology / personal motivations of those individuals
who are under your direct / immediate care and/or supervision.
( a great book for anyone...for any profession )
( author's name would be on the internet I'm sure )
The book explained how a person of authority ( manager )
can motivate most individuals by two primary means:
"warm fuzzies"[/i] or
"cold pricklies"[/i].
( warm strokes "positive re-inforcement" or a "boot-in-the-butt"
...figuratively speaking of course )
I've taken extensive course studies in psychology and sociology,
and even partcipated in several university research testings, that
investigated several of the various motivation factors for individuals
and for groups; however, that was many many "moons" ago,
and as a much-much younger university student.
( it's HELL to get old !!
;D )
Regards !!
